The Shopify order status page: what customers see, and when it isn't enough
Shopify gives every order a hosted order status page. It's the page a customer lands on right after checkout, and it's what the "View your order" button in the order confirmation and shipping confirmation emails opens. Most merchants never look at it after launch, which is a shame, because it answers "where is my order?" for free, as long as your fulfillment data is complete.
What the order status page shows
- Order summary: items, totals, shipping address, payment and shipping method.
- Fulfillment status: unfulfilled, in progress, fulfilled, and (where the carrier is recognised) in transit / out for delivery / delivered.
- Tracking: the tracking number and a link to the carrier, taken from the fulfillment. If you added a tracking number but no carrier or URL, the customer sees a number they can't click.
- A map and estimated delivery for carriers Shopify can read directly (USPS, UPS, FedEx, DHL Express, Canada Post, Royal Mail and a few dozen more).
- Shop app prompt: customers can opt into push notifications for the same order in the Shop app.
Where customers find it
- The confirmation screen after checkout.
- The order confirmation email ("View your order").
- The shipping confirmation and shipping update emails.
- Their customer account, if you have accounts enabled.
Notice what's missing: nowhere on your storefront. A customer who deleted the email has no path to the page unless you add one. This single gap produces a large share of "where is my order?" tickets. The fix is a "Track your order" link in your footer and menu pointing to a page that tells people to open their confirmation email, plus your carriers' tracking sites as a fallback.
Three things that make the page useless
| Problem | What the customer sees | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Tracking number added without carrier or URL | A number, no link | Choose the carrier when fulfilling, or paste the tracking URL. 3PLs: check their Shopify integration writes the URL back. |
| Order marked fulfilled days before it actually ships | "Fulfilled" with no movement | Fulfil when the label is scanned, not when you print it, or use "in progress" until then. |
| Carrier Shopify can't read (many regional and cross-border carriers) | No status, just a link | Acceptable if the link works. If you ship this way for most orders, this is the one case for a tracking app. |
When you need a tracking app
Branded tracking page apps (Parcel Panel, Track123, AfterShip, 17TRACK and others) pull scans from hundreds of carriers and show them on a page inside your store, usually with upsells and their own delay notifications. They earn their fee when:
- Most of your parcels move on carriers Shopify doesn't recognise (common for cross-border and dropshipping stores).
- You want the tracking page on your own domain for the branding or the repeat-purchase block.
- You want automated "shipped / out for delivery / delivered" emails with carrier detail beyond Shopify's own shipping updates.
They don't fix the other half of the problem: the customer who opens your chat and types the question anyway. The order status page and tracking apps are places to look. Customers who ask don't want to look; they want to be told. That is a different tool: see how to cut "where is my order?" emails, step 4.
A checklist
- Place a test order, fulfil it with a tracking number and carrier, and open the order status page from the shipping email. Does the link work?
- Open Settings → Notifications → Shipping confirmation. Is there a delivery window sentence?
- Can a customer reach order tracking from your footer without their email?
- If you use a 3PL: are tracking URLs on orders in admin, not just numbers?
Disclosure: we build Pigeon, a Shopify chat widget that reads the order the customer is asking about and answers status, tracking and ETA on the storefront. It uses the same fulfillment data as the order status page, so the checklist above matters for it too. Free for 100 conversations a month.
