How to cut "Where is my order?" emails on your Shopify store
Ask any Shopify merchant what fills their support inbox and the answer is the same: "Where is my order?" Support teams call it WISMO. For most small stores it is 30–50% of all tickets, and the share climbs every time a carrier slows down or a holiday hits. Each one takes a human two to three minutes: find the order in Shopify admin, copy the tracking number, write the reply. Sixty a day is three hours gone.
The good news is that WISMO is the most avoidable ticket type there is, because the customer isn't asking for judgement. They're asking for a fact that already sits in your Shopify order. Below are the four things that actually reduce the volume, in the order you should do them.
1. Put the tracking link and delivery window in the shipping email (5 minutes, free)
Open Settings → Notifications → Shipping confirmation and check two things:
- The tracking number is a clickable link, not plain text. Shopify's default template does this when the fulfillment has a tracking URL; if you fulfil through a 3PL, confirm the URL is being written back to the order.
- There is a sentence with the expected delivery window ("Standard shipping usually arrives in 4–7 business days from this email"). Customers write in when they don't know what "normal" looks like.
Stores that do only this typically see WISMO drop by a quarter. The customer's question is answered before they think to ask it.
2. Give them somewhere to look (30 minutes, free)
Every order confirmation email already links to Shopify's order status page, which shows fulfillment status and tracking. The problem is that customers don't keep the email. So:
- Add a "Track your order" link to your footer and main menu. The simplest version is a page that explains how to find the order status page (open your confirmation email, click "View your order") and lists your carriers' tracking sites.
- If you ship internationally or with several carriers, a branded tracking page app (Parcel Panel, Track123, AfterShip and others) shows the carrier's scans in one place. These are paid above a small free tier, so only add one when the footer link isn't enough.
3. Tell them before they ask when a parcel is late (1 hour, free)
Most WISMO tickets come from orders that are past the promised window. A customer who gets a short "your order is running a few days late, here is the tracking link" email almost never writes in. A customer who hears nothing does, and they're annoyed by then.
You can do this by hand each morning (filter unfulfilled or in-transit orders older than your window) or automate it with Shopify Flow. Either way, the email is one paragraph; there are ready-made ones in our shipping delay email templates.
4. Let a bot answer the remainder from the order itself (10 minutes, free tier)
After steps 1–3 you'll still get the customers who didn't read the email and just want to type "where's my order #1023?" into a chat box. This is the one place where automation genuinely works, with one condition: the bot has to read the real Shopify order. A FAQ chatbot that answers "please check your shipping confirmation email" makes things worse, because the customer came to chat precisely to avoid digging through email.
An order-aware bot takes the order number or email, looks the order up in Shopify, and replies with status, carrier, tracking link and the delivery window. Anything else (refunds, address changes, "it says delivered but I don't have it") should go to a human with the conversation attached, not into a loop.
Three things to check before you install one:
- Change a tracking number on a test order and ask the bot again. It should reflect the change immediately, not an hour later.
- Ask it something it shouldn't answer ("can I get a refund?"). It should hand off cleanly and tell the customer what happens next.
- Look at the pricing ceiling. Per-ticket or per-seat helpdesk pricing turns a 100-chat month into a surprise bill; flat tiers by conversation volume don't.
What to expect
| Fix | Effort | Typical reduction in WISMO |
|---|---|---|
| Tracking link + delivery window in shipping email | 5 min | 20–30% |
| "Track your order" link in footer and menu | 30 min | 10–15% |
| Proactive "running late" email | 1 h setup | 15–25% (more in peak season) |
| Order-aware chat bot | 10 min | Most of what's left |
The percentages overlap, so don't add them up. Do the first three before the fourth: a bot that answers questions you could have prevented is still a cost.
Disclosure: we build Pigeon, a Shopify app that does step 4: it answers "where is my order?" on your storefront from live Shopify order data and hands everything else to your inbox. It's free for your first 100 conversations a month.
